Marcel was in the Commons, watching thirty minutes of television that he was permitted, every so often, when a guard came over to him. It startled Marcel partly because he was concentrating on the television program and partly because a guard came over to him in the first place. The guard said, Marcel, you have a visitor. Marcel about fell out of his chair!

How is that possible?  His mind started racing.  Who could it be?  Why were they here?  Was it a mistake?  Could he be the wrong Marcel?  He suddenly became very nervous.  How does this work?  He had never had a visitor before and didn’t even know the protocol.

Mike, the guard, sensed his fear and having taken a liking to Marcel over the last several months, decided to be kind and help him out some. Marcel didn’t know that Mike was friendly, because he had never shown it in the past. Of course to survive, nobody acts friendly in prison. Marcel had always been very cooperative with all of the guards, and this made Mikes job a lot easier, so Mike appreciated that and Marcel had earned some level of respect from Mike. It was odd, but a pleasant surprise to Marcel.

Mike said, come with me Marcel, you can meet your guest in a private visitor room. Still in disbelief that Marcel even had a guest, he stood and somewhat wobbly in the knees, followed Mike out of the Commons. They walked down the long hallway through several locked doors and up a flight of steps to an area that Marcel had never been before.

The door in front of them at the top of the steps was the last door before the visitor room. Mike said, your visitor is waiting for you inside. Marcel was terrified! He didn’t know why, but he was. It probably goes back to that whole fear of the unknown thing that Marcel often pondered, while alone at night. Who is on the other side of that door? It was more than Marcel’s fragile state of mind could take. Boom! Down he went. Marcel passed out flat on the floor, right there on the landing at the top of the steps, in front of the visitor’s room door.

Inside, Mimi heard the commotion, wondering just what was going on outside. Just then the door opened a crack and Mike called for Mimi to help him. As she open the door for Mike, she could see that he was doing his best to support Marcel with one arm and open the door with the other.  What happened to him?, she exclaimed! He passed out, Mike told her. He went on to explain that this was not that unusual for inmates when they get their first visitor after enduring such a long period of time without any visitors. The psychological stress was a lot to bear and more sensitive inmates simply couldn’t handle it.

They both managed to get Marcel seated in a chair and then Mike produced some smelling salts. Earlier, he figured that he would need them, and had thrown them in his pocket.  Handing them to Mimi, he said, I’ll be back in awhile, have a nice visit. Somewhat horrified, she took the smelling salts and with a screwed up look on her face said, ooookaaaay?

The door slammed and Mike was gone. Marcel was propped up in the chair and Mimi was sitting across from him holding smelling salts. This is not at all how she had envisioned this visit to go.

Marcel came to, as most people do when presented with smelling salts near their nose. As his eyes began to focus, he saw Mimi in front of him. He was pretty sure that he was dreaming and closed his eyes again. Mimi yelled to him. Wake up! Again he opened his eyes and saw Mimi. This time, he was mostly conscious. He remembered Mike the guard the long hallway, the steps and the door.

Mimi, he exclaimed almost jumping out of his chair!  You’re my visitor, he thought? Hi, said Marcel. Without a pause Mimi replied, Hello.  Marcel followed, How are you? I’m well, thank you for asking, Mimi continued. At the same time, in their hurried exchange they both said, I've missed you. Yes, so have I. It’s been such a very, very long time!  Stopping, they both laughed a moment as people often do when they say the exact same thing at the very same time. Then they just sat quiet for a minute or so.

Mimi asked Marcel what it was like to be in jail? Marcel replied, The days are long and the nights are cold. Mimi followed by telling Marcel how the simple life was so empty without him there. With that, they embraced in the biggest hug that one could possibly imagine. The visit continued for a couple hours. Although the details of the rest of the visit are somewhat sketchy, it would suffice to say that Marcel and Mimi were probably still in love. And as time went on, it would likely become apparent to both of them.

By the end of the day, their visit was only a memory.  But it was a GREAT MEMORY!
