Building A Head Of Steam
Copyright 2024 Mark Ruester

What is this monster that you have created?

My petty arms can’t give me flight, so I created this machine
It has the power to set me free, once I have built a head of steam

Your wing will catch fire. The sunlight will burn you

My petty arms can’t give me flight, so I created this machine
It has the power to set me free, once I have built a head of steam

Your engine will fail. You will fall to your death

My petty arms can’t give me flight,
so I created this machine
It has the power to set me free,
once I have built a head of steam
Well hello! I hope this day finds you well and happy. Thank you for taking a few minutes out of your busy day to read the ramblings of an old fantasy Songwriter/Lyricist.

By now it’s probably come to your attention that we’ve put together a brand new concept album. Yup, it’s a “concept album”. I know, we previously indicated that future releases would be "singles". And, that we probably would never produce another “concept album". Well, like with so many things in life, we were wrong. Sorry.

This one follows our friend Marcel in a most wonderful time; the Victorian Age.  A time when men oozed with honor, and women with seductive allure. It was a time when technology was first introduced to the world. When it was believed that great steam powered engines were to be the driving force; blending the best qualities of man and machine. The possibilities were endless and mankind's technology was just getting started.

In this brand new eleven song collection, we paint our mascot Marcel as the great inventor and lady’s man. Each number was carefully crafted to follow the previous one mapping a musical journey (for about 45 minutes, give or take a few) which will lift the spirit and tantalize the soul. Or, perhaps only give you a few minutes of much needed beauty sleep. Either way, grab your favorite music player and find a comfy chair. Strap on your best headset and set the volume to “safe”. Then turn out the lights and enjoy the listen.

And as always, thanks for listening.

Brass Tacks Will Grind The Gears

All of his days and all of his nights, he's drawing up plans. He's designing it right
The cam is secured to the post on the frame, and pressure is building,
It's likely to blow
He lifts off his goggles and peers at the gauge, reaching the moment - the final stage
It's definitely certain and most perfectly clear, he knows those brass tacks will grind THE GEARS!

Marcel is a man of invention. Restless souls never sleep
His augmented view of the future, improving society
He craves a life of adventure, building better machines
Boldly providing the answer, to questions others can't see

All of his days and all of his nights, he's drawing up plans. He's designing it right
The cam is secured to the post on the frame, and pressure is building.
It's likely to blow
He lifts off his goggles and peers at the gauge, reaching the moment - the final stage

He's a gentleman and a scholar, always a "lady's man"
Often described as magical, a hero in every land
Science is really what drives him, living through many mistakes
Ever searching for answers, he'll do whatever it takes

All of his days and all of his nights, he's drawing up plans. He's designing it right
The cam is secured to the post on the frame, and pressure is building.

Gliding along, solar winds at my tail
Blue Earth below me, all systems okay
Leaving behind an old piece of my life
A new adventure to strengthen my mind
Feeling relief from a stress that's now gone

I'm on my way to better days with my high pressure release
I'm on my way to better days with my high pressure release

Breaking away from those old atmospheres
No longer captive to a fail-safe world
Blurring the lines between man and machine
Aim for Orion's old sparkling belt
Praying the times bring us wisdom and courage

I'm on my way to better days with my high pressure release
I'm on my way to better days with my high pressure release

Reaching the point where there's no turning back
Any regrets will be tossed to the side
Having enough of the world in despair
Event horizon comes into clear view
A final push in a do or die world

I'm on my way to better days with my high pressure release
Pedaling Into The Past

I woke up this morning feeling kind of blue
Read the date on the morning paper it read nineteen 'o' two
Wondering where in time I’m going, it's a sunny day
Think I'll get out my penny farthing and ride it away

Pedaling along down old memory lane
there's signs that I'm going too fast
Got to slow this bike down while I'm still around
my future's becoming my past

Take the shortcut downtown and stop for some tea
Everyone's in such a hurry, rushing on to eternity
Must've ridden through a portal, into another plane
I don't feel like I belong here, I guess I’m going insane

Pedaling along down old memory lane
there's signs that I'm going too fast
Got to slow this bike down while I'm still around
my future's becoming my past

Pedaling along down old memory lane
there's signs that I'm going too fast
Got to slow this bike down while I'm still around

Questioning our origin, Taunting our heart from within

Science explains it away, Faith causes others to pray

In the end we will see, Will our soul live for eternity?

It's impossible to be sure
The real reason that we are here
We accept our fate and carry on
Though our destiny isn’t clear

Is technology our friend? Or, is it driving our end?

Doomsday prophets make it clear, Technology should be feared

Suppose they have it all wrong, Destiny is but a song

It's impossible to be sure
The real reason that we are here
We accept our fate and carry on
Though our destiny isn’t clear

It's impossible to be sure
The real reason that we are here
We accept our fate and carry on

Strange Lives

Our lives are so mundane, same old thing every day
Can't seem to break the chain, must be a better way
Far away lands separate me from you
We're worlds apart. I'm probably just like you
Rain washing sins away, cleansing in thermal springs
Melting a life, some say to live another day

Open your eyes, Let love in
In the end we're all the same

Our lives are so mundane, same old thing every day
Can't seem to break the chain, must be a better way
Oceans divide, language barriers too
Wish we could leave, you wish the same thing too
Rain washing sins away, cleansing in thermal springs
Melting a life, some say to live another day

Open your eyes, Let love in
In the end we're all the same

Our lives are so mundane, same old thing every day
Can't seem to break the chain, must be a better way
Soon we will find truth is a curious thing
Living strange lives, nothing seems good enough
Rain washing sins away, cleansing in thermal springs
Melting a life, some say to live another day

Open your eyes, Let love in
In the end we're all the same

Open your eyes, Let love in
In the end we're all the..

My Time Machine

I lurk in the shadows. Sometimes I catch your eye
Observing the progress of a world that's going awry
Some of you think that you know why I'm watching you
Others seem to be surprised
No one has proven my actual existence, many continue to try

With a smile, and a nod, then I’ll be on my way
My journey through life, on my own time machine

I play with your cameras, audio signals too
I whisper in your ear and make a big fool of you
Some of you think that you know why I'm watching you
Others seem to be surprised
No one has proven my actual existence, many continue to try

With a smile, and a nod, then I’ll be on my way
My journey through life, on my own time machine

Soon you'll discover all of my devious fun
Then you will find that I'm not the only one
Some of you think that you know why I'm watching you
Others seem to be surprised
No one has proven my actual existence, many continue to try

With a smile, and a nod, then I’ll be on my way
My journey through life, on my own time machine
